This unit is about is about common problems and situations and their solutions. In the first lesson, each new teaching position, a teacher will be faced with meeting a number of new classes for the first time. such classes are in two categories; new group and existing group. The teacher should do the following with a first class; establish rapport, find out about students, find out about the students' needs and aspirations with english, find out english level of each individual. The following activities can help out; questionnaire, survey, needs analysis etc. Warmers. They are usually fun, short, communicative activities designed to get students motivated and using english. eg;hangman, pictionary, tongue twisters and memory game. Students can be at varying levels. A teacher can deal with this by; using different materials, same materials different tasks, pair strong ones with weak ones and just don't do any thing. Large classes can present problems to the teacher. A teacher can employ a number of techniques to create a successful class; use worksheets, group/ pair work, appoint group leaders, choral repitition etc. A teacher should avoid the use of the native language. When it comes to reluctant students, those who don't want to participate, a teacher should do the following; use plenty of pair work, use a tape recorder, use role play, use controlled practice. I have learnt that I should help students with their listening skills. I have learnt that I should carry out the lesson at the pace of the majority. I have learnt that I should establish rapport during my first lesson.
